The Cuban People

Two months ago I had the opportunity to travel to Cuba for the first time. Although the visit was short it was very special and opened my eyes to a new culture. Life in Cuba was different from anything I’ve ever experienced.  I arrived with an open mind and no expectations and I was completely surprised at what I found.

Before the trip, I had heard that going to Cuba was like traveling back in time, and that’s exactly how it seemed. As soon as I got out of the airport, the colorful antique cars were everywhere and I could see buildings covered with artwork of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, and pro-revolutionary graffiti like “Viva la Revolución.” However there was something else that caught my attention even more.

The Cuban people are what impressed me the most. In the face of an oppressive communist government and widespread poverty, their talents and positive attitudes shine through. Their warm souls always have a special story to share, whether it is their stories about working as an artist, talking about their beloved cigars or just their simple way of living.
