Santa Barbara Veterans Day Marathon

Runners took over the streets of Goleta and Santa Barabara, California on November 8, 2014 for the Santa Barbara Veterans Day Marathon.  Of the 4,000 participants that came from all over the world to participate, 3,100 finished the race.

Starting in the Goleta Valley at Dos Pueblos High School, the full marathon runners ran past UCSB and the outskirts of Isla Vista, up along the foothills on Cathedral Oaks Road, and finally crossing over to the ocean front along Shoreline Drive to finish at Leadbetter Beach. The half marathon started in Santa Barbara and ran through the wooded hillside of More Mesa before turning onto Las Positas Drive and joining the full marathon route headed towards the ocean.

Spectators and supporters lined the route cheering on the runners as they struggled through the unseasonably warm weather. At mile marker 22, local resident Malory Monsma didn’t know anybody running, but came out to support all of the runners nonetheless. Her words of encouragement and sign saying, “Runner’s High, Legal In All 50 States”, were met with both smiles and laughter.

First time marathon runner Kristen Fleck traveled from Paradise in Northern California specifically to run in the Santa Barbara marathon to show her support of our veterans. “The sign on at the last mile marker saying, ‘the first 25.2 Miles Are For Me. The Last Mile Is For Our Veterans’, explains it all,” says Fleck. For her first marathon, Fleck finished with a respectable time of 5:11:20.

Sammy Cheruiyot Mutai, 36, of Kenya took first place overall clocking in a time of 2 hours, 31 minutes, 40 seconds and Paige Burgin, 22, from Los Alamitos, California claimed the woman’s title with a time of 3:06:39. Two time Santa Barbara marathon winner (2010-2011) Monida Marube, 35, of Kenya took the half marathon title with a time of 1:13:31, and Rita Beyon, 35, of Santa Barbara took the woman’s half marathon title with a time of 1:27:29.  The top masters in the half marathon were Todd Booth, 45 and Desa Marndarino, 43, both of Santa Barbara, clocking in at 1:16:56 and 1:29:40, respectively.
