Central Coast Comic Con

Characters from anime, sci-fi, horror, Steampunk, video games and anything you can imagine came to life at the Ventura County Fair Grounds in Ventura, California, last weekend, Sep. 12-14.

The second annual Central Coast Comic Con, or C4, opened its doors on Sep. 12 to hundreds of people from all over the country and different parts of the world to showcase their best costumes and participate in several events.

Comic Con is for all ages and this year’s had an immense variety of vendors, artists, and special guests like Tyler Mane (X-men and Troy), Len Wein (comic creator, writer and editor), Sergio Aragones (the fastest cartoonist in the world), and many more celebrities that gave seminars, signed autographs and bonded with their faithful fans.

One of the special guests at C 4 was Artist Sergio Aragones, a Spanish/Mexican cartoonist and writer best known for his contributions to MAD Magazine and creator of the comic book Groo the Wanderer. He is also known as the fastest cartoonist in the world. Aragones has been working with MAD for 52 years and focuses on social issues.

“I satirize what is happening with the environment, and when the cartoon shows the abuses in a funny way …  people laugh a little because all the editorials just make you sad because they don’t give you a solution. They just pin point a problem on the darkest side, so it depresses you and there is nothing you can do about it. At least with us we are doing a little humor and then you realized how important it is,” he said.

Aragones loves to attend Comic Con because it is a place he can be with his fans and peers.

“When you are working at home you don’t get that feedback, you come to these places and you meet the guys and then it’s terrific! You meet people from different nationalities and I can see what is happening with the medium too, what the other guys are doing, so is very important,” he said.

Like Sergio Aragones, many other artists came to share their knowledge. The Winner Twins, Brittany and Brianna, national best selling novelists with multiple awards in science fiction, gave seminars on how to break into or expand your career in Hollywood and how to create your own novel.

All the artists invited to the event mingled with their fans and exchanged ideas while other people took the opportunity to network. There is an entire industry behind all of this fun. Costume designers, make-up artists, vendors, models and collectors take this opportunity to advertise themselves and show their talents to the world.

Central Coast Comic Con closed its doors on Sep. 14, 2014 on a very positive note and they have high expectations for next year.
