The Light Out There

For the past eight years sports have helped Oralia Perez learn how to stay focused while trying to accomplish her personal goals. Perez is a 17 year-old-girl who’s participated in almost every sport her schools have had to offer, but she finds the most joy in soccer.

Perez was born and raised in Salinas, California, a city that is considered to be the salad bowl of the world due to it’s agricultural abundance, and was once the home to acclaimed author John Steinbeck. Salinas is also known for its high crime rate, violence and street gang activity, which has led a vast majority of the youth down the path of destruction.

Perez believes playing soccer has kept her away from spiraling down along the wrong path and she’s grateful her parents have guided her on the right path. Not only has soccer helped her achieve her personal goals, but it has also helped her cope with her personal struggles. Soccer has had an immense impact on her life and she would like to share her story, offer advice and sometime in the future be able to coach teenagers in her community.
